Part time instructor Spero resigns from Fort Lewis College

Fort Lewis College President Brad Bartel announced today the immediate resignation of Maria Spero, a part time instructor at the college.

Spero admitted to kicking student Mark O’Donnell in response to a political t-shirt he was wearing at Gazpacho New Mexican Restaurant in downtown Durango. On Oct. 28, the president asked for an investigation of the incident involving Spero and O’Donnell.

That was a Republican shirt he was wearing.

"Fort Lewis College will not condone any actions by its employees that interfere with a person’s free speech whether it occurs on or off the campus," said Bartel. "These rights are inherent in our public liberal arts college. Physical confrontation by any faculty, staff member or student at Fort Lewis College is not tolerated."

Neither individual knew each other prior to the incident.

The college will proceed immediately to fill the teaching position to ensure that no loss of class time will occur for Spero’s students.
