More evidence why the U.N. needs to be kicked to the curb
Just three words: corrupt, corrupt, corrupt:
CHINA and Russia were named yesterday as Sudan's main arms suppliers.
The report, by Amnesty International, came as the United Nations Security Council prepared for an extraordinary meeting today aimed at securing peace in the strife-torn African country.
Amnesty said the two countries, permanent members of the Security Council, had consistently shipped weapons to the Khartoum Government.
The arms were used against civilians in the 20-year conflict in south Sudan and during the crisis in Darfur, in the west of the country, which had forced 1.8million villagers from their homes, Amnesty said.
Details of the weapons trade will put pressure on China, the largest single investor in Sudan's oil industry, and on Russia. Both have used their vetoes on the Security Council to block economic sanctions against Sudan.
Just for the record, 70,000+ people have died in the Sudan due to the genocidal war. And as the article mentions, 1.8 million have been forced from their homes (and into refugee camps - and you know what those are like). All this on the heels of the revelations regarding the Oil For Food scandal. It's time to end the U.N. They are an ineffective and corrupt organization that is leading to the deaths of the people they claim to be looking out for.
