Why the left fears homeschoolers
A cartoonist at the Arizona Daily Star felt the need to unfairly and unjustly portray homeschoolers' parents as child abusers (and as Richard Nixon, apparently - good observation, Dawn) based upon 3 stories about abuse. But what's the real story behind the bashing of homeschoolers and their parents? Jon of Kirkcentric has the answer:
The scariest army to the ungodly isn’t North Korean or Russian or even the faceless hatred of al Qaida.
It’s an army of faithful Christians, uncontrolled and unseen by the authorities and marching beneath the same awesome banner.
They fight because we advance.
Absolutely and amen, Jon!
I just sent a letter to that paper. Here's what I wrote (with the links not in HTML form, of course):
To the editor:
I am absolutely outraged that you would let such a disgusting cartoon depict homeschoolers' parents as child abusers. On the webpage for the cartoon, you seemingly dismiss the rightful criticism you've received by pointing to the supposedly "more complete context" of 3 stories of abuse. Alright. Fair enough. I guess we can then also portray public schools as state-sponsored sexual abuse centers based upon a recent study that found a shockingly large percentage (15%) of students will be victims of sexual abuse by public school employees before they graduate. It would only be fair to see a fitting cartoon by Fitzsimmons reflecting that report appear in your paper very soon. Unfortunately, I don't hold any hope of that ever happening. It's easy to both bash homeschoolers and their parents while ignoring the gross abuses of the oh-so-perfect public school system.
Remember, free speech is a right, but when it is abused to unfairly and unjustly smear innocent people, it becomes a crime.
