Incredible adult stem cell breakthrough

Studies back up U of L stem-cell findings
Scientists around the world are confirming a breakthrough by University of Louisville researchers that promises to radically alter the national stem-cell debate and provide treatments for conditions such as stroke, heart disease, diabetes and Parkinson's disease.

The researchers coaxed stem cells from adult mice to change into brain, heart, nerve and pancreatic cells -- mimicking embryonic stem cells.

Now, "a lot of people report the presence of embryonic-like cells in adults," said Dr. Mariusz Ratajczak, leader of the research team and director of the stem-cell biology program at U of L's James Graham Brown Cancer Center.

Eventually, Ratajczak said, such findings may eliminate the controversy surrounding embryonic stem cells because the adult cells seem to hold the same potential.

...

Since Ratajczak unveiled his work in December, related discoveries have been announced by at least five other laboratories.
